Register to Start or Join a Community Conversations Team
We’re looking for unemployed or underemployed individuals in townships, informal settlements, inner cities and rural areas to form teams to host these monthly events. You don’t need a full team to apply. Simply select the role(s) you want to play, and we’ll guide you through the process.
How It Works:
- Choose a role:
- Facilitator: Suitable for unemployed or underemployed degreed professionals – such as social workers, community organisers, teachers and lawyers – even without formal qualifications in facilitation. Also suitable for community activists or trained facilitators with experience in respectful, inclusive discussions on social issues. South African Conversations provides the topic, background information, visuals and guiding questions. Unless another team member takes on the leadership role before a facilitator joins, facilitators are the de facto team leaders.
- Videographer: This role requires video production skills and access to equipment or a smartphone with a good camera. An external microphone is an advantage. Responsible for filming Community Conversations.
- Security Guard: Suitable for individuals with security training and experience in managing safety and responding to incidents. May not be required if the venue is safe or already has on-site guards.
- Caterer: Ideal for NPOs or venues with facilities to prepare healthy, simple meals for attendees. This is a practical, community-driven role – not high-level professional catering.
- Venue: This could be an NPO’s office, a place of worship, school, community centre, a restaurant or business premises that’s safe and within walking distance for local attendees. It could even be a park.
- Advertising Salesperson: While South African Conversations aims to secure one advertiser per community, teams are strongly encouraged to secure at least one local advertiser to avoid delays because Community Conversations cannot start without one. Multiple advertisers are allowed and will and increase the income of all involved. This is a potentially lucrative opportunity for individuals with sales experience or business contacts. It doesn’t need to be tied to a single team or community.

Select one or more roles below, and you’ll automatically receive a follow-up email with a registration form for each role you selected. Once those are completed, and unless you are clearly unsuited for the role or have not submitted the required documentation, you’ll receive a role-specific guide and an invitation to join a Community Conversations WhatsApp group where all key information is shared – including meeting notifications, Q&A sessions, training and updates.Due to high interest in this opportunity, we are unable to respond to individual emails or calls.
Note: Community Conversations is a social-entrepreneurial opportunity for South Africans in historically disadvantaged communities. This is not a job offer. If accepted, you will not be an employee of South African Conversations. Instead, you will be partnering with us to bring meaningful change and income-generating opportunities to your community.
